In Buxton, on Hatteras Island in North Carolina, the sea swallowed five houses in less than an hour. Hurricanes Imelda and Humberto, which remained offshore, generated huge swells that ripped the sand from under the pilings. As a result, the wooden villas fell one by one into the ocean. In the same street, six houses have already collapsed in two weeks, and eighteen since 2020. No one was hurt, and all were empty.
