The Mexican training ship ARM Cuauhtémoc collided violently with the Brooklyn Bridge at around 8.30pm on Saturday evening. It was backing up when it hit the bridge, losing its three 45-metre masts. On board: 277 people. The toll: 2 dead, 19 injured, including 4 in critical condition. The accident is thought to have been caused by a mechanical problem. Sailors were still clinging to the masts at the time of impact. The ship had been docked since May 13 for a goodwill tour. The rest of the tour has been suspended. An American-Mexican investigation is underway.
