In Mexico City, a truck loaded with sodas was swallowed by a huge sinkhole in the Iztapalapa district. The hole, some eight metres deep and seven metres wide, opened up without warning under the road. The vehicle flipped into reverse and became trapped, its rear end raised to the sky. It took the emergency services over twelve hours to extricate it. No one was injured. The mayor pointed the finger at an old, weakened drainage system, a recurring problem in this town built on an ancient lake.
