Mount Etna erupted in Sicily. Tourists ran for their lives as clouds of ash rose for several kilometers. One agency had around 40 people on the volcano at the time. Guide Giuseppe Panfallo recounts how the group was almost hit by the cloud: "We were just a stone's throw away, so it's a good thing we had a responsible guide". The eruption was sudden, with enormous smoke and a powerful roar. The last eruption on this scale was in 2014.
