The ground literally split open in Myanmar on March 28 during a magnitude 7.7 earthquake. The earth was torn apart over 460 km, far more than expected for this type of quake. This rare phenomenon, known as a supershear earthquake, occurs when the rupture moves faster than the seismic waves. Over 3,700 dead, villages razed to the ground, roads unusable. A month later, almost 200,000 people are still living outdoors. Aftershocks still occur almost daily in the center of the country.
