The city of Oakland, California, is facing a serious crisis. Its streets are teeming with homeless camps, garbage and cars stolen and dismantled in broad daylight. Crime is rife, and the homeless population has reached a record high of 5,490, double what it was ten years ago. Progressive Mayor Sheng Thao and District Attorney Pamela Price, known for their lack of toughness on petty crime, are up for impeachment in the next election. Many residents describe the situation as a "war zone", due to the increasing violence and insecurity. In response to the crisis, California Governor Gavin Newsom has sent additional police patrols to try to contain the disorder.
