Oops: A thief comes face to face with police after shoplifting

Kirk Wharton, a 33-year-old recidivist shoplifter, literally clashed with police after stealing items from a Co-op store on Mansfield Road, Sherwood. Rushing out of the store, Wharton, who had just stolen food such as meat, cheese and fish to fund his drug habit, encountered officers investigating a series of shoplifting incidents. Nottingham Crown Court heard that Wharton had committed several thefts between June 18 and August 8, 2023. Despite attempts to help and rehabilitate him, Wharton, described by the prosecutor as a prolific shoplifter, refused to enter a drug rehabilitation program. He was sentenced to 22 weeks in prison after pleading guilty to 26 counts
